Your Online Presence

The Gap Between Your Social Feed and What Families Actually Need to See

A center's social media presence tends to be built for the families who are already there. The photos from last week's sensory table. The holiday party recap. The teacher appreciation post. These are the moments that feel natural to share, and the families enrolled at the center genuinely appreciate them.

But a different audience is also watching: the families who haven't enrolled yet. They're scrolling your feed trying to answer a question that has nothing to do with what happened at the sensory table. They're trying to figure out whether your center is the kind of place they'd feel good about.

Those two audiences need different things from the same profile.

What current families see versus what searching families look for.

A family who enrolled three months ago scrolls your feed to stay connected. They recognize the teachers. They know the context. A post that says "Miss Amy's class had so much fun at the fall festival!" lands exactly right for them.

A family who found your page through a search has no idea who Miss Amy is. They're reading between the lines. They're looking at the photos to understand what the environment feels like. They're reading your captions to get a sense of your values. They're checking whether the account looks active and maintained. They want evidence that the center is real, warm, and stable, and they're assembling that evidence from whatever's in the feed.

Content that builds trust with both audiences.

The good news is that both goals can often be served by the same content, if it's framed the right way. A photo of a child deeply engaged in an activity tells a searching family something important about the environment. A post explaining your approach to outdoor time says something about your values. A teacher spotlight gives a searching family a sense of the people their child might spend time with.

The centers with the strongest social presence don't post more. They post with more intention. They think about what a family who doesn't know them yet would take from a post, not just what a family who does know them would feel.

The profile as a front door.

Before a family ever visits your building, your social profile is the front door. The bio tells them what you are and where you are. The highlights tell them where to look first. The feed tells them what it's like to be part of this community. According to research PMG conducted in 2025, 71% of U.S. adults use Facebook, and among parents of young children, nearly half visit online parenting communities at least monthly. That audience is active, it's searching, and it's forming opinions before a single conversation takes place.

A feed that works for current families and searching ones isn't a harder goal. It's a more deliberate one. The difference is usually less about what you post and more about how you think about who's watching.
