Getting Found

Why Families Can't Find You (Even When You're Right Down the Street)

You've been in the community for years. Families drive past your sign every day. Your teachers are excellent, your classrooms are warm, and the families already enrolled would recommend you without hesitation.

And yet your phone isn't ringing the way it should.

This is one of the most common situations we see with early childhood education centers. It has almost nothing to do with the quality of what they offer. It has everything to do with visibility. Specifically, digital visibility. The kind that determines whether a family who's never heard of you can find you at all.

The search has moved online. All of it.

When a family realizes they need childcare -- a new baby on the way, a move to the area, a job change that requires care they didn't need before -- they don't ask a neighbor first. They open their phone. They type something into Google. And in the next thirty seconds, they form an impression of who the best options in their area are.

If your center doesn't appear in those results, you don't exist in their search. You're not being compared and losing. You're simply not in the conversation.

In research PMG conducted on how U.S. families find licensed child care in 2025, 65.7% of parents said they got information from people they know. Word of mouth still starts the journey. But the same research shows that Google is almost always the next step -- the place families go to verify what they heard, check reviews, and decide whether to reach out. Being recommended isn't enough if you can't be found when someone goes looking.

Proximity isn't the same as visibility.

This is the part that surprises a lot of directors. Being nearby doesn't automatically mean being found. Google doesn't reward proximity alone. It rewards relevance and completeness. A center two towns over with a fully optimized digital presence will rank above a center a mile away that has an incomplete profile, outdated information, and no photos.

That's not unfair. That's just how the system works. And once you understand it, you can work with it.

The centers that consistently appear in local search results share a few things in common. Their business name, address, and phone number appear the same way everywhere online: on their website, on Google, on Apple Maps, on Yelp, on every directory that lists them. That consistency is a signal Google reads. Inconsistency creates confusion and quietly erodes your ranking.

Their Google Business Profile is complete. Not just claimed. Complete. Business category, hours, photos, services, a description that actually says something, a booking link that takes families somewhere useful. All of it filled in. All of it accurate. All of it working together to tell Google: this center is real, it's active, and it's worth showing to families who are looking.

Their website speaks the language families are actually using. Not the language of educators, which tends toward curriculum frameworks and developmental philosophy, but the language of a family searching at 9pm who types "preschool near me" or "infant care in [city]" because that's how they think about what they need. When your website uses those terms naturally, it becomes findable in a way it simply isn't if you've only used internal language.

The good news is that this is fixable.

Most of the gaps between a great center and a findable center aren't complicated. They're not expensive. They're unglamorous, methodical work. The kind of work that rarely feels like marketing but compounds quietly over time.

Cleaning up your listings. Optimizing your profile. Making sure your website says what families are searching for. Building consistency across every place your name appears online.

None of it is a silver bullet. All of it is real. And the centers that treat this work as foundational, not as optional or cosmetic, are the ones that stop wondering why their phone isn't ringing.

You're not down the street from the families who need you. Not yet. Getting found is how you get there.
